I tried to put off this movie as long as I could, but there is only so much I can do when my wife has control of our netflix account. I had feared The Notebook would be the cinematic equivalent of a Thomas Kincade painting, overly sentimental and without substance (I don’t know how that guy makes a living). Anyway, I was surprised. The Notebook was actually fairly good. I guess I do have a bit of a sentimental side. [Spoiler Alert] I have to say that I think the film romanticized Alzheimer’s disease a bit by not placing more focus on how unbelievably difficult it can be for families. I guess they were worried about making it even more of a tear-jerker.
Speaking of tear-jerker movies, what would you say is the saddest movie of all time? House of Sand and Fog tops my list by far. I watched it once alone when my wife was out of town and it really messed me up.

What is Liz's secret to controlling the Netflix account? Even though Ricky denies it, I swear he keeps removing all the movies that I put on the queue.
There is some jockeying around of the films on our queue but Liz makes most of the Netflix selections. She has a knack for picking excellent films that I would pass over so we have developed this system. I pick up films from the library and she uses the Netflix account. I do occasionally slip in new releases onto the queue when I can’t get them at the library, but I would say only about a fourth of the films on the queue are mine.
We developed this system after many years of Liz suffering through hours waiting for me at Blockbuster. See, I like to take a long time looking over the movies, collecting a stack of potential rentals, reading them over, before making my one final selection. I am somewhat neurotic about it, I guess. The funny thing is you can put on just about anything and I will watch it. Well my video rental rituals would absolutely drive Liz crazy. So we developed this system and, as of now, it seems to work well for us.
I LOVE the House of Sand and Fog. I make my students watch it and create a fake psych eval when I teach Abnormal Psych. I got the idea from the book "Movies And Mental Illness: Using Films To Understand Psychopathology." Don't think my students liked the fact that I didn't prepare them for the ending, but...
House of Sand and Fog has great depictions of depression, substance abuse, and suicidial ideation.
But I bawl everytime I watch it too. Couldn't stop for air type of crying when I saw it for the first time by myself and of course my boyfriend at the time walked through the door when that happened and it freaked him out. Oh well.
